Trainee

Why did you apply to Boodle Hatfield?

I applied to Boodle Hatfield because its excellent reputation ensures that trainees are exposed to high quality work during their training contract, and its smaller size means that they are given lots of responsibility and client contact from day one. I was also attracted to the mix of practice areas which are offered; having made no firm decision as to the type of lawyer I wanted to be on qualification, the opportunity to be able to work for both commercial clients and private individuals throughout the two years was a huge draw.

Describe your experience integrating into the firm during your first days and months?

Even before my first day I had already attended two Christmas parties which meant that I had met the other trainees in my intake prior to starting, and was also able to recognise some faces at the firm during my first few days. New trainees have a three day induction before beginning their first seat, which includes presentations from each department so you know the sort of work you can expect to be doing. The first few weeks include quite a few welcome lunches and drinks; Boodle Hatfield has a deserved reputation for being a friendly and inclusive place to work, and its size means that you quickly start to feel part of the team.

How much responsibility have you had as a trainee and what is the typical type of work you have been involved in?

From the very start of my first seat in the commercial property department I had my own small files to run. It’s exciting to have such responsibility from day one and the firm’s genuine ‘open door’ culture means that there is always someone who is willing to answer questions and check things through. In the property department typical trainee tasks include drafting licences and short form leases, and assisting with the title investigation for larger transactions. I have also sat in the corporate department where recently I have been conducting due diligence on a target company and helping to prepare a report for our client, the buyer. Across all departments, trainees will attend client meetings, conduct research and write articles for magazines and the firm’s own website.

Trainees are also very much included in the business development side of the firm which is an important part of being a solicitor. Thankfully, these events are far from the stereotypical image of a stuffy networking evening; during my training contract, BD events have included a dodgeball tournament, a fashion show, and a gallery hop around Mayfair to mark the start of Mayfair Art Weekend.

What has been your biggest achievement to date?

Aside from being part of the second years’ winning entry for Boodle’s Got Talent 2017, I also felt a real sense of achievement towards the end of my property seat when I completed a re-finance of a commercial property outside of London. It is not the most complex matter I have been involved in as a trainee, but it was an area of the department in which I had not had much experience, meaning that it was a challenging matter to work on, and very satisfying when it did complete successfully (and on time!).

What has Boodle Hatfield given you that you may not have got elsewhere?

I think what makes the firm stand out is that being a trainee doesn’t come at the expense of your own life out of the office. Obviously there will be periods when you are busier than usual, but you are certainly able to maintain a good work-life balance throughout the two years. Training at Boodle Hatfield also gives you the chance to actually enjoy your training contract; the work is hard but rewarding, and the office is full of friendly, sociable people.
