Legal Assistant - Private Client & Tax

Contract Type: Fixed term contract (12 months)
Working pattern: Full Time, or would consider 3 or 4 days per week
Purpose: To assist with the administration of large estates including complex issues and to manage the administration of smaller, more straightforward estates.

Responsibilities

The probate team deals with the administration of estates of varying sizes and complexity. The team aims to provide a highly organised, efficient and cost effective service which relies on work being carried out by a fee-earner at the appropriate level. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to play a key part in achieving this aim.

The role will be to assist the team with the administration of estates and a small number of simple trusts. Particular responsibilities will include:

  • Obtaining valuations of estate assets and liabilities including correspondence and telephone calls with financial institutions, surveyors, stockbrokers.
  • Preparation of inheritance tax accounts and subsequent correspondence with H M Revenue & Customs.
  • Drafting of executors’ oaths, deeds of renunciation and other probate documentation.
  • Arranging payment of legacies.
  • Correspondence to liquidate estate assets or transfer them to beneficiaries.
  • Preparation of estate accounts.
  • Preparation of tax returns for both deceased individuals and trusts and estates.

Person Specification

We are looking for someone who will be able to deal with clients, their advisers and others, in a professional and courteous manner. This will include meeting such individuals face-to-face on occasions. The role will be pressurised from time to time and candidates will need to be able to use their own initiative and be quick-thinking and flexible in their approach to their work.

  • Strong academic background.
  • Educated to degree level and completed the Legal Practice Course, having achieved a Commendation or Distinction.
  • Strong numeracy skills.
  • Whilst previous experience in probate would be highly desirable, training will be provided.
  • Good team player.
  • Strong organisational skills with the potential to manage multiple files.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Self-starter with plenty of drive and initiative.
  • Ability to utilise the appropriate IT systems.
