Rosie Adcock

Trainee

Why did you apply to Boodle Hatfield?

I had previously worked in an accountancy firm in which Boodle Hatfield was regarded very highly, it was recommended to me as an excellent law firm to train at and work for. In addition, from my research into the different law firms, Boodle Hatfield offered one of the best opportunities to gain high-quality experience in a wide range of practice areas that mirrored my interests.

It was also important to me to work in a firm of a size which would allow a high level of trainee involvement, client contact and training.

Describe your experience integrating into the firm during your first days and months?

Although the first day was inevitably a bit of a blur of names and faces, everybody was so welcoming and eager to make us feel at ease. We had a few days of induction before starting in our first seats, and that time really helped us learn a bit more about the firm, different departments and what was expected from us as trainees. This included presentations from each department in which we might complete a seat, as well as a talk on "what makes a good trainee". We also met and had lunch with our supervisors on the first day. What really stood out once we had got started in our first seats was how supportive and helpful everybody in the firm is. There are also lots of opportunities to get to know people other than just through work, for example through sports teams and firm events such as Boodles Got Talent.

How much responsibility have you had as a trainee and what is the typical type of work you have been involved in?

You are given significant responsibility as a trainee, and have the opportunity to run your own files right from the start of your training contract. I am currently in my first seat, which is Litigation, and have already had a huge amount of exposure of disputes proceeding to Court, and then these claims progressing through the Court system. It is very interesting work, and you learn a lot very quickly through this high level of exposure as well as excellent supervision by other members of the department.

In the Litigation seat you are exposed to a wide range of work. As well as running my own smaller files relating to, for example, landlord and tenant disputes and debt recovery, I have been involved in larger art law and corporate litigation matters. There has been lots of opportunity to get involved in research, court hearings, client meetings and advising. The mixture of work and experience sets you up with a really strong grounding.

What has Boodle Hatfield given you that you may not have got from elsewhere?

The firm has an excellent balance of being large enough to offer high levels of exposure to many different areas of law, but small enough so that you feel a very valued member of the firm. The trainee intake each year is small in comparison to other firms, and this means you receive excellent supervision. While everybody works very hard, the hours are reasonable, and there is a friendly atmosphere throughout.
