In her latest article, Clare Pooley explores how the abolition of the UK’s non-dom regime from April 2025 and the shift to a residence-based tax system are reshaping global competition for wealthy individuals.

She outlines how countries across Europe, including Switzerland, Italy, Greece, Portugal and Spain, as well as the UAE, are positioning themselves to attract internationally mobile families through favourable tax regimes. While tax efficiency is an important consideration, Clare emphasises that lifestyle factors such as stability, infrastructure, education and cultural access remain central to relocation decisions.

Clare highlights that among the alternatives, Italy stands out as one of the most attractive destinations, offering a straightforward flat tax regime, the flexibility of additional incentives, and the stability to support long-term planning. By contrast, Switzerland’s system comes with restrictions, Greece and Portugal face infrastructure and administrative challenges.
