Why did you apply to Boodle Hatfield?

I was attracted to Boodle Hatfield initially because of its size and practice areas.  I was interested in Private Client and Family and I knew that the firm had an impressive reputation in these areas.  I had heard that trainees took on greater responsibility at an earlier stage and were given a higher quality of work, compared to trainees at some larger firms.  I have certainly been given plenty of opportunity to show initiative and, especially in my seats in Family and Residential Property, I have been a primary point of contact for clients.  I also knew that the firm’s clients were becoming increasingly international and this was a point of interest.  When I did my Family seat, for example, I assisted on numerous cases with a cross-border element, which were truly fascinating.  I am pleased to say that my hopes and expectations have all been met - or exceeded!

What was your first day like?

As is to be expected, I felt rather nervous in the run-up to the first day of my first seat (the trainees here have three days of induction before starting in their first departments) but I soon realised that the anticipation was much more nerve-wracking than the first day itself! My first seat was in Construction and my supervisor and the other members of the team gave me some tasks to get started with but nothing urgent, so I also had time to settle in and remind myself of how the various systems worked. My PA was really helpful and showed me how to do all sorts of useful things which set me up well for the rest of the training contract. The first day is tiring because everything is brand new but it felt good to finally be getting started.

How would you describe the culture of the firm?

The culture at Boodle Hatfield is, above all, friendly and open-minded. PAs, solicitors and Partners alike are extremely generous with their time and there is a real emphasis on personal and professional development. Trainees are often directly supervised by Partners and Partners are genuinely interested to hear what trainees have to say. Trainees are expected to work hard during working hours but are also encouraged to have a life outside of work. It is very rare to have to work late into the evening and there is no obligation to stay at your desk if you have finished all your work for the day (within reason of course!). Boodle Hatfield is a very sociable firm and there are lots of opportunities to get to know people across all of the departments so that, as you move into your second, third and fourth seats, there is a good chance you will already know several members of your new team, which tends to make the transition easier.

What has been your biggest achievement to date?

In my Family seat I was thrilled to assist on a case that was heard in the Court of Appeal and to attend the final hearing. It was a great result for our client and a huge success for the firm. It was also during the course of my seat in Family that I was charged with drafting 15 witness statements for a hearing in a co-habitation dispute. This meant having to speak to each of the witnesses individually to collect their evidence and working closely with our barrister in order to finalise the statements. It was great to be so involved in the direction of the case. More generally, I have felt like a full member of the team in each of the departments I have experienced, which I think is partly an achievement but also a real reflection on the outlook and inclusiveness of the firm.
