Corporate social responsibility

Community involvement is extremely important to us; we recognise our accountability to our clients, staff, the community and the environment.

Community and corporate social responsibility

We try to make a difference in the way that we conduct our business: we support initiatives that contribute to the good of the community, contribute financially to selected charitable causes and adopt environmentally friendly working practices.

In particular we are actively involved in the Bankside community and are proud to have been recognised for our efforts with a Bankside Star  stamp of accreditation.

As a firm we are very involved in the local community and have hosted workshops with local schools. Last year we hosted a workshop at our Bankside office for 23 year 10 students from a local school who had been selected by the school for the work experience programme, which involved a week of visiting a variety of employers across the City and Southbank. We also hosted a similar event for 6 Better Bankside Events Academy Students.

At the Student Workshops, volunteers from across Boodle Hatfield spoke to the students about their roles and entry route into the Firm, helped students prepare for a debate against their peers and showed the students around the office. As we continue to work with Southwark EBA and Better Bankside we are looking at developing further links with schools in the locals area.

More recently, volunteers from the Firm participated in the annual Southwark Employability Fair. The fair showcased different organisations and careers to students who are in years 9-12 at secondary schools in Southwark. We got the students who came to see us involved in role plays so they could practice the skills required to be a successful solicitor.

Environmental responsibility

We are conscious of our carbon footprint and the need to act in an environmentally responsible manner. Our current headquarters is located in a building which holds an EPC rating of B (35) and we are actively involved with the management to support environmentally friendly policies within the building.

As part of our drive towards carbon neutral working we are committed to a programme of continuous improvement which includes the initiatives listed below:

  • Minimising paper consumption and waste through the use of e-filing systems with the long-term goal of achieving a 'paperless office'
  • Recycling of all waste paper, printer cartridges and organic materials
  • Reusing packaging where possible minimising waste and transportation related fuel consumption
  • Ensuring we work with suppliers that are committed to recycling and the efficient use of resources
  • The firm's cycle to work scheme, which includes provision of dedicated bike storage spaces, and is designed to assist employees in reducing the carbon footprint of their daily commute.

Fundraising

Each year, within the firm, we select a Charity Partner to be the recipient of our fund raising activities. This year we are supporting The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity which is a world-leading cancer centre which pioneers new treatments that save lives. They use their research to provide the very best in diagnosis, treatment and care for their patients.

In previous years we have supported Mind, Youth at Risk and Macmillan Cancer Support.

Our activities have ranged from the fiercely contested 'Boodle's got Talent' and Boodle Baker competitions to sponsored runs and quiz nights. In 2017 some brave employees took part in a sponsored sky dive and successfully jumped from 12,000 feet to raise money for Mind and this year we have 5 volunteers free abseiling down the 114 meters the ArcelorMittal Orbit in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

The firm also has a give-as-you-earn scheme which allows staff to make tax free donations from their salary to any charity or voluntary organisation in the UK.

Volunteering and pro bono activities

We are keen to support our people becoming involved in a variety of community initiatives. In addition to the Student Workshops and Employability Fairs we participate in, we also undertake a reading scheme with St George's Cathedral Catholic Primary School in Southwark.
