International

In today’s global economy, business is conducted across multiple jurisdictions and business areas. We provide English legal advice, in a global context, for our international clients in both their business and personal lives.

Working in London means that we are surrounded by some of the most vibrant and culturally captivating scenes every day. It is no wonder that so many of our overseas clients want to invest or live here.

Experience shows that in spite of numerous challenges - be those economic or political - London remains a great place in which to live, work or establish a business. For many, a land of uncertainty has become a land of opportunity, and we enjoy helping our clients achieve their goals on an international stage.

We provide a wide range of legal advice to our clients from all around the world from our offices in the UK and we are highly reputed for the international work that we do. We have a team who advise on the complexities of US / UK estate planning, a market-leading Middle East advisory team and in-depth knowledge of offshore territories and the key European and global financial centres.

Middle East

We have a leading Middle East private office to serve the needs of our high net worth and ultra high net worth clients on issues ranging from pre-immigration tax planning to establishing family offices and managing valuable assets. Our property team also offer a full service to clients from the Middle East who are looking to invest in the UK property market.

Assisting a Middle Eastern family wishing to relocate from their home jurisdiction in identifying potential jurisdictions in which they could base themselves (the family considered the UK, Monaco, the United States and Portugal) and from which they could manage the family’s global business interests. The family ultimately relocated to the UK under a Tier 1 investor Visa and we assisted them with their pre-immigration planning as well as establishing a family office to manage the family's real estate and private equity portfolio.

Advising a Middle Eastern client on the purchase of a house in Belgravia for c. £20m. This was a complex transaction which involved providing advice on property tax, trust structures, succession planning, as well as mortgage financing and life insurance.

USA

We are seeing an increasing number of referrals from international law firms, particularly in Switzerland and the USA who recognise our international expertise in working for clients with multi-jurisdictional requirements.

  • Advising an entrepreneur, on succession planning following a successful exit from an insurance business, including advice on assets in the US, Italy and the UK and careful consideration of his wishes as to the division of the estate between family and charity. There is a need for wills and tax planning taking into account the both the US and the UK exposure of the estate.
  • Advising a gallery on numerous commercial matters including commission of works and managing artists' estates.

Switzerland

  • Advising a well-known philanthropist who is resident in Switzerland but has assets in numerous jurisdictions, including the UK, Switzerland, Panama, BVI and France. The project involves advice on the UK anti-avoidance tax regime for the offshore structures (where substantial property interests and fine art are located in the UK) and, in particular, reviewing a currently non-charitable foreign law trust to determine whether (by Court application or otherwise) the valuable assets can validly be applied for charitable purposes in the UK.

Offshore

  • Acting for the settlor of a number of Cayman trusts that hold amongst other things, valuable chattels, the shares of various entities including a £200m development in Costa Rica and the sale proceeds of the former matrimonial home. The family is entirely financially dependent on the trusts and the current institutional trustees, as part of an internal de-risking project, wish to go. Our team dovetail the private client advice with assistance on how to navigate potentially contentious situations and ensuring that things do not escalate unnecessarily.

We are a member of TAGLaw, an international network of law firms which provides us with a reliable source of overseas lawyers who we work closely with and to whom we can refer client matters if necessary.
