John specialises in non-contentious and contentious construction law. He has over 15 years' experience advising developers, lenders, professional consultants, contractors, sub-contractors and insurers on a broad range of commercial projects and disputes.

Acting for developers

  • Acting for a residential developer on a major regeneration project in North London, drafting the joint venture agreement and development management agreement.
  • Acting for a well-known developer in relation to the Nine Elms (Lambeth College) redevelopment.
  • Acting for the Crown Estate in the mixed use development of The Quadrant, drafting and negotiating the development management agreement and negotiating ancillary construction documents as part of the £500 million Regent Street redevelopment.
  • Acting on the £30 million redevelopment of Ingram House WC2.
  • Acting for Delancey in the development of Rolls House, Fetter Lane.
  • Acting for Aviva Investors in the £360 million Bath Southgate redevelopment.
  • Acting for Westfield on the procurement of transport links to the Westfield London development, negotiating and drafting the bespoke construction management agreement and trade contracts, a lump sum design and build contract, professional appointments and all ancillary documentation – collateral warranties, performance bonds and parent company guarantees, escrow agreements and deeds of novation.

Acting for contractors

  • Negotiating contract amendments, drafting and negotiating professional appointments, sub-contracts and security documents for the development of a £20 million distribution warehouse.
  • Acting on a £70 million housing development, negotiating the contract strategy, drafting and negotiating the various building contracts, professional appointments and ancillary documentation as the project evolved. The procurement structure featured a phased development agreement, five amended JCT building contracts and a separate building contract relating to infrastructure works running throughout.
  • Drafting and negotiating the project agreement, building contract amendments, construction direct agreement and security documents for the Perth & Kinross Schools PPP.
  • Drafting and negotiating the bespoke design, supply and installation agreement for Yorkshire Water's Hull onshore wind farm project.
  • Drafting and negotiating a number of building contracts for Al Raha Beach, an award winning mixed use development over 11 precincts in Abu Dhabi.
  • Amending and negotiating the building contract for the Sellafield encapsulated products store.

Acting for banks, funders and purchasers

  • Carrying out construction due diligence on numerous high value transactions, most recently acting for a private equity house reporting on the construction documents as part of the multi million pound purchase of the business of a care home operator.
  • Acting for forward funders, advising in relation to draft development and construction documentation.
  • Drafting and negotiating the construction aspects of funding agreements and joint venture agreements.
  • Acting for a high street bank on numerous developments of its stores.

Acting for consultants

  • Advising a Sterling Prize winning architect in relation to its appointments on the Riverwalk development in London, the Royal Opera House Open Up project, King's Cross Square, Cambridge Judge Business School, the Britten-Pears Archive in Aldeburgh and numerous other high profile, complex projects.
  • Drafting a suite of appointment and sub-consultancy documents, the co-operation agreement and security documents for an Irish-based international project manager in relation to a major infrastructure project in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.  
  • Advising a large international consultant in relation to an appointment to design a waste to energy plant in Qatar.
  • Advising on the bespoke appointment terms for the design of a large education project in Dubai Sports City.
  • Advising an international consulting practice on its appointment to the Learning Environment Improved Infrastructure Programme for USAID in Jordan.

Dispute Resolution Experience:

  • Acting as part of a team representing a large international architect in defending a high value claim before the Dubai Court of First Instance.
  • Acting for a hotel developer in relation to claims for defective work/failure to rectify defects brought by the hotel operator under a sale and purchase agreement.
  • Conducting the defence in a high value dispute relating to the atrium glazing at a shopping centre.
  • Conducting mediations in a number of claims, including a claim against a firm of architects pleaded at £800,000.
  • Acting for a developer in relation to proceedings for negligent building work brought by the freehold owner against the developer and the contractor. Negotiating and agreeing forms of consent order, remedial contract and waiver.
  • Acting for the contractor conducting the defence in relation to a £1.5 million claim by the owner of the beneficial leasehold in relation to latent defects in the steel frame and floor slabs of an office building.
  • Acting for the contractor in an adjudication to recover additional materials costs relating to a train depot slab trade contract.
  • Acting in numerous adjudications, both for referring parties and responding parties, and acting in actions to enforce (and resist the enforcement of) adjudicator's awards for.
