Becky is an Associate in Boodle Hatfield’s leading art law team and commercial litigation department. Experienced in representing clients in a wide variety of art law matters, Becky advises on authenticity issues, fakes/forgeries, title disputes, damaged artworks, insurance claims, recovery of art works, disputes arising from art financing, injunctions to prevent sale and copyright and intellectual property disputes.

In 2017, Becky was recognised in the Legal 500 as 'a safe pair of hands who provides solid support' and was nominated for ePrivate Client Practitioner’s Top 35 Under 35.

While the majority of disputes are settled confidentially out of Court, Becky has acted on two of the most important reported art law cases of recent years:

  • The Creative Foundation v Dreamland Leisure Limited and Others [2015] EWHC 2556 (Ch)) which resulted in the recovery of a Banksy mural, 'Art Buff', which was removed from a leasehold property in Folkestone. As well as being one of the first cases to consider the ownership of street art, the case also has wider implications for landlord and tenant law.
  • Thwaytes v Sotheby's [2015] EWHC 36 (Ch) which was a professional negligence claim relating to the sale of a painting sold as a copy but subsequently attributed to Caravaggio.

Becky acts for a wide range of clients including street artists, artists, galleries, dealers, private collectors, high-net-worth individuals, entrepreneurs, companies and CEOs.

Becky has recently acted for a number of street artists in claims involving breach of copyright by brands incorporating their work into advertisements without permission, which is an emerging area of law.

Although specialising in arts matters, Becky has also acted on a wide range of contractual disputes, negligence claims and commercial litigation. These included a multi-million pound claim relating to Kaupthing bank, a £50m commercial property dispute, and, at the more unusual end, a partnership dispute over an Argentinian steak restaurant, a dispute over a Greek Orthodox cemetery memorial, and a squatters eviction.

Becky co-founded and contributes to Boodle Hatfield's dedicated art law blog, Art Law & More and its accompanying Twitter page.

Becky’s art law practice is complimented by an art history short-course at the Courtauld, a secondment at the Arts Council, and the Institute of Art and Law’s Diploma in Art Law. Becky has also spoken at the Courtauld Law Society and Christie's Education on art law and litigation, and provided legal workshops for gallery owners in London.

Becky trained with Boodle Hatfield and qualified in September 2012 after graduating from the College of Law in 2010 and the University of Cambridge in 2007.
