Parental leave: the need for change

Do read Josh Glancy on "Our pathetic paternity leave system" in the Sunday Times. He doesn't go as far as my previous suggestion of compulsory paternity leave but his assertion that the status quo "works just fine for the patriarchy" is refreshing.

The gender pay gap does indeed start to kick in for women as they bear children. We do need a cultural sea change because - just as Glancy writes - "With shared parental leave, hiring women in their early thirties becomes less 'risky' for bosses".

A radical change could improve not only greater diversity in the work place particularly at leadership levels but also perhaps better childhoods given that most experts argue that it is a fundamental emotional need for a child to have enduring relationships with both parents, where possible.
