International

In today’s global economy, business is conducted across multiple jurisdictions and business areas. We provide English legal advice, in a global context, for our international clients in both their business and personal lives.

Expertise

International clients

We are based in London, but much of our work is international, whether we are advising individuals on their personal estate planning, companies on their worldwide business activities, or advising on multi-jurisdictional disputes.

International advice

The global nature of business and personal life today requires that legal advice must be applicable across different legal systems. Our lawyers are adept at advising on a wide range of complex, demanding matters and in coordinating advice from different jurisdictions to provide a seamless solution.

International professional relationships

We have developed strong relationships with leading firms around the world who have expertise in specific areas. We therefore can select the right overseas advisor for each individual situation whom we are confident will provide the quality of advice, cultural understanding and client service that our clients expect from us.

TAGLaw

We are a member of TAGLaw, an international network of law firms which provides us with a reliable source of overseas lawyers who we work closely with and to whom we can refer client matters if necessary.

Ecovis

We are also the London member law firm of Ecovis, a leading global consulting firm whose focus and core competencies lie in the areas of legal advice, tax consultation, accounting and auditing.

Track Record

Corporate

  • Taking War Horse and One Man, Two Guvnors to Broadway
  • Advising a UK based seller in relation to the sale of an international commodities trading group to a non-UK buyer.
  • Acting for a German buyer in relation to the acquisition of a UK-based specialist engineering business.
  • Advising a major Continental installer of photovoltaic power plants on its projects and commercial relationships in the UK.

Private Wealth

  • Advising an international entrepreneur on the tax-efficient transfer of £30m of shares in a privately owned business into trust for children in advance of an IPO. This involved asset protection considerations, securing business property relief for inheritance tax purposes and hold-over relief for capital gains tax purposes. It also required swift service in order that the transfer could occur suitably in advance of the IPO.
  • Reorganising two very large non-UK Will Trusts, originally set up offshore by a non-domiciliary and which own a trading group with subsidiaries in various countries together with a valuable portfolio of investments held through offshore structures.
  • Advising a non-UK national, tax resident in a second jurisdiction but who also lives partly in a third country and has assets held personally or in trust in both those countries and a number of other jurisdictions, in relation to her Will, succession planning and wealth structuring, including the devolution of those assets.

Resolving Disputes

  • We have acted for US, Dutch, French, German and Scottish companies in substantial litigation in England and Wales.
  • Advising the trustees of a Jersey settlement in relation to the disclosure of information relating to the trust in the context of ancillary relief proceedings in the English Courts.
