Fiona advises a broad range of UK and non-UK domiciled high net worth individuals on private client, tax and trust work. She has particular expertise in advising on trust and tax matters for landed estates, acting for several large landed families including as a trustee herself. In addition she provides expert tax planning in relation to chattels and historic buildings, conditional exemption claims on valuable pieces of art, purchases, gifts and leaseback sales and owners' and trustees' responsibilities for their art. She also deals with several family businesses and has significant experience of both domestic and offshore structures including the strategic tax planning and trust issues relating to those.

Fiona's recent projects

  • Fiona is a trustee of significant landed estates in Hertfordshire, as well as of other family trusts and an Executrix of various Wills in the course of administration.
  • Extensive advice on tax reliefs available on death, inter-family arrangements or sales of property, and on succession planning from one generation to another.  To include: tax planning with the family home including reversionary lease schemes, co-ownership and full consideration arrangements; implementing a partnership and succession planning arrangement for a landed estate in Sussex to secure business property relief from Inheritance Tax, as well as to ensure the income requirements for family members are maintained; pre-death emergency tax planning and then advising following the death of a landowner on availability of tax reliefs, including with mineral royalties.
  • Court Application for a set of family trusts containing significant chattels, agricultural estate and property in London and elsewhere, to extend the lives of the trusts for a further 125 years together with securing more modern provisions for the trusts and further trust powers to give flexibility and opportunities for tax planning.
  • For a family with a very significant collection of chattels, advising on Inheritance Tax planning opportunities including negotiating with various institutions on open access requirements.
  • Fiona advises a number of international clients, for example a Bermudian domiciliary and his family (some of whom are UK resident) on their extensive trusts and how to respond to the evolving rules for non-domiciliaries and offshore trusts, including the structuring of a significant gift to a US charity.
